Central Celebrates Pride 2022

Central is blessed by the perspectives and presence of LGBTQ+ Clergy, congregants, guest speakers, families, and staff year-round, and Pride Month is a meaningful time of celebration and reflection for our community. Our religion—as well as Jewish history—compel us to help build a world in which every human is entitled to freedom, respect, safety, care, and love. This year, as legal challenges to LGBTQ+ rights continue to mount across the nation, celebrating Pride feels especially significant. As always, we affirm our belief that God wants each of us to live and love as our authentic selves.

The rainbow flag seems an especially resonant symbol for Pride at this moment. Rainbows help us perceive that light isn’t a monolithic phenomenon, but a beautiful and dynamic spectrum. So it is with life and love. In our tradition, the rainbow takes on yet another layer of meaning in the story of Noah’s Ark, representing God’s promise that humankind will never again be destroyed. For Jews, the rainbow evokes hope. It is an affirmation of humanity, and the possibility of a new and better world.

May we honor and uplift all ways to live and love in the beautiful and dynamic spectrum, and may we do our part to help build a new and better world—throughout Pride Month, and all year long.
