We stand as one with the people of Israel. We mourn the tragic loss of life. We pray for a swift resolution to this violence.

Shamor v’Zachor (Protect and Remember): Photographs by Fran Kaufman

Every Friday Beginning January 6, 2023, 7:15–8:00 pm and Every Wednesday Beginning January 11, 2023, 12:30–2:00 pm

In Person (Pavilion)

When Bob, the man I fell in love with fifty years ago, began to drift away, I assumed it was simply the slowing-down of old age. But when he awakened me one night to ask, “Who are you, and what are you doing in my bed?,” I knew we could no longer think of this as a normal decline.

In this poignant new exhibition, photographer Fran Kaufman offers us a glimpse into a life defined by memory, loss, and love. Here, she tells the story of a husband disappearing into the mists of his own mind, but a marriage that remains vital. Her sensitive, lyrical images illustrate a path of aging that is familiar to many of us--but also includes the twists and turns unique to her husband Bob's diagnosis of dementia. Their story is shaped by dementia, but is not fully defined by it. This exhibition illustrates a heart-breaking journey, but one that is life-affirming at the very same time.

Public viewing hours for this exhibition are Fridays from 7:15-8:00 pm (following Shabbat services) and Wednesdays from 12:30-2:00 pm.

Central Synagogue exhibitions are held in the Pavilion, located in the Sanctuary building (652 Lexington Avenue), with the entrance on 55th Street.
